My dad has commuted on his bike daily for nearly 20 years. He actually has some studded snow tires, though.

Well, I have racing slicks. It sucks. Cold, but I somehow find grip. I get wheelspin, though, which on a bike, is the equivalent of shitting & peeing yourself up on a stage at the exact same time. Terrifying, to be exact.

3.5 miles isn’t that far.
I ride my bicycle to work from time to time and that’s about 12 miles with some hills.

As a cyclist, my answer is nope. Not a problem. Are you a good rider? Shouldn’t be a problem. If you’re not a good rider, this should help you become one. Brake early, turn slowly.
Know when to take the bus.

If you’re doing racing slicks, get contis, as they last a lot longer than Michelins. Go get some cross tires, don't run slicks in the wet.

Ehhh, I can’t take the bus. Too far away from bus stops. But, yes, I am a great rider. I have ridden 2,000 miles in the past year, in fact.

Well, on thin slicks, it is pretty far.

I quit riding 23s when I moved to Louisiana. Now I ride 38s (cyclocross frame) and laugh at the other guys getting beat up on our terrible roads.
In the snow? No thanks. That’s what the beater MTB is for.

Thin tires actually work better in snow than fat ones.

Here in the Netherlands this wouldn’t even be a question. You just do it.
You would be weirder if you didn’t bike that.

As a cyclist: get on with it.
As a car-ist: why are you riding a bike? Especially in this weather...

I have noticed that. They cut through the snow very well...

Do you have enough frame clearance for cyclocross tires? Because they’re great in snow.
I went on Cl and found an old mountain bike, put semislicks with decent shoulder treads and use that in the winter. Cost me around $70 for the bike and ~$150 in parts to get it back into shape for a commute. When I ride in it’s 23 miles (roughly 800-1000 feet of vertical) and not too bad, although they clear our roads pretty well.

I have no space for anything. It sucks.
